[part 1 - arrival]

[ in the world he comes from, knowledge of what exists beyond the three walls that both confine and protect humanity is limited, even forbidden. Though he's ventured beyond the outermost wall - something that only the Survey Corps is capable of doing, and always with sacrifices - Levi knows humanity has only seen an immeasurable fraction of what it once had. He cannot begin to fathom what the rest of the world could be like outside of their short ventures beyond the walls.

So when he awakens in this place, it doesn't occur to him that it could be a different world entirely.

Although the wings are unsettling. Those are new. And itchy as hell. ]

The fuck...

[ in a world where people can transform into titans taller than the monstrous walls that keep them caged, the sudden appearance of wings somehow doesn't seem that terribly far fetched, even if he has no idea how or why, or - more importantly - whom.]

[Part 2 - recon: Written/Action]

[ It's been several hours now, and all of the information he's gathered so far is confusing at best and disturbing at worst. Knowledge of the outside world had been limited, but knowledge of other worlds? Unheard of. He's still trying to wrap is head around it.

After checking for the gear (nowhere to be found, much to his irritation, and thankfully he hadn't had to go far for his uniform), he finds a bench and takes out the journal-like device and studies it thoughtfully. The technology is foreign, and somehow it seems exceedingly fragile - though there is a space to write, and that's all he needs at the moment to help organize his thoughts.

So the following appears, in meticulous, elegant penmanship that he'd only learned a few years ago:]

No reports or knowledge so far of Titans among general populace
No walls - a 'dome' keeps people in by someone/something called the 'Malnosso'
Inhabitants appear to be from diverse locations
Human experiments...need more information about these damn wings
Captors supposedly provide unlimited food, clothing, shelter. Pretty fucking convenient way to keep people placated.
Currently no 3DMG found; other weapons readily available
Technology much more advanced than anything found within the walls ("Electricity?")
Rumors of a war with a group called the 'Third Party' that seeks to exterminate all living within the dome - motivation unknown
...animals can talk...fucking creepy; might be useful

[It means quite a bit, only for the fact that Levi knows Marco is supposed to be dead, though he'd never met him in person. There's a considerable pause.]

[he will be incredibly surprised if Marco doens't recognize his name.]

[Marco does indeed recognize the name, not just because of Levi's high rank. He's heard a few stories from Jean over the past months.]

Captain Levi of the Survey Corps?

[the one saving grace of his reputation is that it saves the need of having to explain to anyone who he is.]

Yes.

It's an honor to meet you, sir! Jean's told me about you. [There's a moment's pause, then he hastily adds:] All good things, of course!

[The last thing he wants is to get Jean in trouble with his new superior officer.]

[cute, Marco.]

Save it.

[flattery was hardly necessary and incredibly ineffective on Levi anyway.

Then a thought occurs to him that he hasn't thought of until now, so he writes:]

Where do people live in this place?

[Wow, okay, so maybe Jean's stories weren't all good things, but it's still an honor to meet Captain Levi. That bit wasn't unnecessary flattery.]

In houses and the community buildings. All available living spaces are free for the taking.

[People honor him right up until they accuse him of not having any human compassion. It's just easier to never even start, really.]

Is there anything here that isn't free?

No, not really. It's just that some things are harder to come by than others. Gas supplies for our maneuver gear, for example. I'm sure the Malnosso will only allow us to have as much as we need, not any more than that.

[ so there was part of the catch; supplies were free, but not limitless. How much was "needed" is entirely subjective, and Levi would bet his life that the Malnosso wouldn't be so careless as to let any of the inhabitants become a serious threat, even if they had weapons. ]

How much they think we need and how much we actually need don't necessarily add up, I bet.

Have they ever stopped supplying anything?

Not that I'm aware of, but others might be able to remember instances like that.

I see. [he adds that to his mental list of things to investigate. Providing necessities such as food and shelter are all well and good until they're taken away.]

Where are you living now?

[given what he's heard, Levi wouldn't be surprised if Jean and Marco lived close together. It'd be easier to keep an eye on things if all four of them were in a similar location.]

An apartment on the second floor of the Flame building. It's the one in the north-west section of the village. Every apartment has four separate bedrooms, so even in the community buildings we have more space than we really need.

[He's so used to being crammed into one space with about twenty other guys, the idea of having four bedrooms for just himself and one other person seems almost silly.]

I see. Enjoy it while you can.

[...well okay aside from the fact that Marco is dead. But anyway. Being close by to the recruits will probably be better for them in the long run, in the event of...anything. Which apparently is what can happen in this place. ]

Anything else you think I should know?

[While he can? What's that supposed to mean? Is it a reference to his situation back home, or was Levi just being realistic about the state of Luceti? Any luxuries here could be taken away by the Malnosso just like that and he knows it.

Probably best not to think too hard about Levi's words. He'll just consider the next question instead.]

Jean is here too. He arrived two months ago. Have you seen him yet?

[ Just that you never know what will happen. Marco should know that better than anyone.

[Jean told him, huh? He wonders what exactly they talked about. How Levi reacted when he heard a person who's supposed to be dead is walking around here. Because he knows, right?]

You must be glad to have at least one familiar face around here.

[oh yes. He knows.]

Commander Erwin Smith is also here.

[... The Commander Erwin Smith? It'd have to be.]

He is? When did he arrive?

[do you know any other Erwin Smiths, Marco?]

About the same time I did.

[Just because Marco doesn't know them doesn't mean they don't exist, but the chances are pretty slim.]

I wonder if the Malnosso did that on purpose.

What do you mean?

They regulate who gets sent into which enclosure. So they're the ones who made sure you and Commander Smith both appeared here instead of some other enclosure.

How kind of them. Wonder what the purpose for that is.

It's for their own benefit, probably. Maybe they'll draft you and Commander Smith for that war they're fighting.
